Default joint finishing: tape coat + two finishing coats on joints. Select this option to add one thin skim coat over the selected walls and ceiling; extra coats or texture leveling need more material.

How to calculate drywall sheets, compound and tape

Choose Whole rooms for all four walls of each rectangular room, with a ceiling option per room. Choose Individual walls for only the wall faces you need. Add each surface once; all selected areas use the same sheet size and finish option.

Gross surface, cutouts and panel purchases

Room walls (sq ft) = 2 Γ— (length in feet + width in feet) Γ— height in feet
Selected room ceiling (sq ft) = length in feet Γ— width in feet
Individual wall (sq ft) = wall length in feet Γ— wall height in feet
Sheets = round up (combined gross surface in sq ft Γ— 1.10 Γ· sheet area in sq ft per sheet)

Dimensions are in feet. A 4-ft Γ— 8-ft sheet covers 32 sq ft; a 4-ft Γ— 12-ft sheet covers 48 sq ft. Gross surface drives panel purchasing because a door or window cutout may not save a usable sheet. The net finishing surface subtracts 18 sq ft per entered room opening, or the actual cutout area entered for an individual wall. Confirm a panel layout, especially across separate walls or rooms.

Joint coats and the optional skim

Default joint finishing means a tape coat plus two finishing coats on joints. It does not mean three coats over the whole wall. The reference compound allowance is 9.4 US gallons per 1,000 sq ft of net surface, plus 10% reserve, following the USG Midweight product coverage rate.

Joint compound (US gal) = net surface in sq ft Γ— 9.4 US gal Γ· 1,000 sq ft Γ— 1.10
Optional thin skim (US gal) = net surface in sq ft Γ— 0.5 US gal Γ· 100 sq ft Γ— 1.10
4.5-US-gal pails = round up ((joint compound in US gal + skim compound in US gal) Γ· 4.5 US gal per pail)

The skim option adds one thin full-surface coat over the selected surfaces. Its 0.5-gal/100-sq-ft rate is this calculator’s planning allowance for smooth new board, not manufacturer-guaranteed skim coverage. Thick leveling coats, texture repair and extra passes need more compound. Joint and skim compound are combined before rounding, so skim may fit within pails already needed.

    Tape and screw allowances

Tape uses 370 ft per 1,000 sq ft of net surface plus 10%, rounded to 500-ft rolls. Screws use a planning allowance of 1.25 per sq ft plus 10%, rounded to whole screws and then 1,000-count boxes. Actual fastening requirements depend on framing and the selected panel assembly.

Worked example: two 10 ft Γ— 8 ft walls

Inputs: Individual walls, two walls each 10 ft long and 8 ft high, zero cutouts, 4-ft Γ— 8-ft sheets and no skim coat.

Estimated materialsReference prices for this example$147.00

Adding the thin skim increases compound to approximately 2.53 gal in this example, which still fits in one 4.5-gal pail. The purchase cost stays unchanged. Outside-corner bead, adhesives, special rated assemblies, texture, primer, paint and tools require separate allowances. Confirm ceiling panel suitability and framing requirements.

    Drywall project questions

Can I estimate drywall for just one or two walls?

Yes. Choose Individual walls and add each wall length and height in feet, plus its cutout area in square feet. The calculator combines the selected surfaces before rounding to whole sheets and consumable packages.

Can I calculate drywall for two rooms with different ceiling options?

Yes. Choose Whole rooms and add each rectangular room. Set dimensions, opening counts and the ceiling checkbox separately for every room. All areas in one estimate use the same sheet size and skim selection.

Why does adding a full-surface skim sometimes leave the price unchanged?

The skim adds compound, but the combined quantity can fit within pails already needed for joint finishing. Joint and skim gallons are combined before rounding to 4.5-US-gal pails. The result explains the extra material and whether another pail is needed.
