How our DIY material and cost estimates work

Understand the measurements, product coverage and purchase allowances behind the calculators before you shop.

Methods and examples checked October 30, 2026.

Calculated need and what to buy

Measurements are entered in feet for project dimensions and inches for tile dimensions and grout joints. Areas are in square feet. The calculators apply the stated cutting or application allowance, then round up to purchasable boxes, sheets, boards, rolls, bags or pails.

A 110-sq-ft tile target with 15 sq ft per box needs eight boxes covering 120 sq ft. Costs use those eight purchased boxes. Leftover coverage after package rounding is different from the waste allowance.

Prices are entered by you where the tool provides a price field, or use the reference allowances displayed in the material list. They are not live store quotes. Labor, tax and delivery are excluded; each calculator lists additional scope exclusions. All cost totals reconcile to itemized material quantities and unit prices.

Tile, grout and thinset mortar

Multiple net areas are combined for one shared tile product. Tile purchases use box coverage and the chosen cutting allowance. Mosaic grout uses individual chip dimensions, while box coverage controls tile purchasing.

Grout uses matching Polyblend Plus coverage tables where available, scaled to the entered filled-depth allowance. Other combinations use an approximate joint-volume model calibrated to those tables. Grout estimates include 10% reserve and round to the displayed package size.

Mortar uses installed area plus 10% application reserve, divided by square feet per 50-lb bag. Suggested coverage is based on tile size and a stated trowel; the product coverage override should match the chosen mortar and trowel. Wall/floor and dry/wet settings provide guidance, without an automatic quantity multiplier. Premixed adhesive, waterproofing and substrate preparation require separate estimates.

Flooring boxes, trim and underlayment

One rectangular room is estimated for a floating installation. Flooring uses room area plus the selected waste percentage, rounded to whole boxes. Choose quarter round, shoe molding, new baseboards or no new trim. Included trim covers the full perimeter plus 10% for cuts, rounded to the entered stock length; doorway widths are not deducted. Each doorway adds one transition allowance. Trim prices are entered per selected stock piece.

Optional underlayment uses room area plus 5%, rounded to 100-sq-ft rolls. Include it only if approved for the selected flooring and subfloor. Separate moisture barriers require their own allowance. Nail-down and glue-down installations, subfloor repairs, trim removal/preparation and installation fasteners/adhesives are excluded.

These are the calculator’s explicit planning assumptions. Use your flooring box label for coverage and price, and verify a cut plan for trim.

Drywall for individual walls or multiple rooms

Whole rooms include four walls and an optional ceiling per room. Individual walls use their entered dimensions and actual cutouts. Room opening counts use an 18-sq-ft allowance per opening. Panel purchases use combined gross area plus 10% because opening cutouts may not save usable sheets.

Joint compound uses 9.4 US gal per 1,000 sq ft of net surface plus 10% reserve. Default joint finishing is a tape coat plus two finishing coats on joints. The optional skim adds one thin full-surface coat using a planning allowance of 0.5 US gal per 100 sq ft plus 10%. That skim rate is a calculator assumption for smooth new board, not manufacturer-guaranteed coverage.

Joint and skim gallons are combined before rounding to 4.5-US-gal pails. Tape uses 370 ft per 1,000 sq ft plus 10%, rounded to 500-ft rolls. Screws use 1.25 per sq ft plus 10%, rounded to 1,000-count boxes; this is a purchasing allowance rather than a fastening schedule.

Shed framing, roofing, siding and foundations

The selected footprint, assembled low-wall height, framing spacing, roof, overhang, siding, foundation and door drive the takeoff. Boards, sheets, roofing bundles and hardware packages use the stated stock sizes and reference prices. Category notes describe the modeled assemblies and exclusions.

The Common Shed Build Estimates table uses 24-inch wall stud and rafter spacing. The main tool defaults to 16-inch wall stud spacing and 24-inch rafter spacing, so its total can differ. Skids include a modeled subfloor platform; concrete uses a lump-sum slab material allowance.

This calculator does not design structural assemblies or determine permit requirements. Gambrel roofs and other unsupported configurations show incomplete material subtotals. Ground anchoring, site preparation and other excluded assemblies need separate plans and pricing. Verify framing layouts, spans and connections against project-specific plans and supplier specifications.

Interior paint and primer

Rooms use four walls with optional flat ceilings; individual walls and ceilings can be entered separately. Actual cutout square feet are deducted. Net area in square feet × coat count ÷ product coverage in square feet per US gallon per coat gives gallons before the editable extra allowance.

Finish paint defaults to two coats at 350 sq ft per US gallon per coat. Primer is optional: none, actual spot-prime area, or all selected walls and ceilings. Included primer defaults to one coat at 300 sq ft per US gallon per coat. An editable 10% application and touch-up allowance is applied to both. Product instructions govern preparation, coverage and coat count.

Each wall paint color/product is combined across its assigned areas, then rounded separately to the selected 1-US-quart, 1-US-gallon or 5-US-gallon container size. Ceiling paint and primer each use a separate shared product and separate rounding. Cost uses whole containers and the price entered per selected container. Changing container size does not automatically change the price. Different ceiling colors or primer products require separate estimates.

Brush/roller application only. Trim, doors, exterior work, spray losses, supplies and preparation costs are excluded. Prices are editable planning allowances, not live quotes. Labor, tax and delivery are excluded.

How the calculations are checked

Automated checks cover hand-calculated examples, selected published product-coverage values, whole-package thresholds, invalid inputs, exact cost reconciliation and consistency across calculator pages. Browser checks cover changing inputs, adding areas, error recovery, PDF downloads and responsive layouts for the tested examples.

These checks do not replace a site survey, a product-specific material layout, structural design or professional review. Sources support the particular rates cited; they do not endorse this site. Project-specific design and professional review are outside the scope of these planning tools.

When you prepare your project, verify measurements and product specifications, compare the displayed assumptions with your actual assembly, and check supplier prices before ordering. The calculator pages include fixed worked examples so you can compare inputs, calculated need and purchase quantities.
